I realise that for some matters, no matter how much I prepared myself for it. Tell myself that a particular disappointing scenario would be the most likely outcome (99.999%). But when it indeed happens, I still can't bear the fact. I still feel sad and lousy and disappointed.

Guess some things, you just can't be prepared for.

And I'm trying to remind myself that everything happens for a reason. It might seem painful now, but hopefully it leads to great things in future.

This is tough.

Been taping my bunion and toe for the past 2 runs. The discomfort and slight pain remain but I guess it is slightly better than if i dun tape it.

Just did another 6km this mrn ... mileage is pathetic but guess I just have to be patient and accept whatever I can do.

Idle updates

I have not swam in ages! Easily over 2 months and ytd I finally felt "in the mood" to wade in the pool a bit before the start of my first work day after the long break. I took it very easy since engine is rusty from the lack of practice. Several laps into my swim and I saw Aichai. Pleasant surprise! Apparently he come to the same gym for swims but since I'm seldom at the pool past couple of months I never get to see him til now. We chatted a bit before continuing with our swim ... his 2 laps equivalent to my 1. hahahaha :P We catched up a bit at the end of his swim talking about his next event, about some of our mutual friends etc. So happy to see a friend whom I haven't see for so long! And very happy to have the chance to catch up and chat a bit :) Good start to the day.

The next few hours passed in a blur .... heart sank just looking at the pages of red emails awaiting my clearing ... and I realised that I didn't set my out-of-office email properly. SH*T ... so some of those email senders may be fuming over my super delayed response. Haiz .... *bang head for own stupidity*

The break helped me gain some perspective about work and my attitude towards it. Its hard to put into words but I know this isn't what I want to continue doing. That I return to work refreshed yes, but not with renewed strength, interest nor dedication to carry on with what I'm doing.

This new room is growing on me. The thicker curtains help to block out the glare from the sun and I end up sleeping longer. Shiok! Managed to do a short run at 10+am. Normally I would have to be dragged to run when the sun is already out, but today somehow the idea of a run under the sun didn't feel that repelling so I took the chance and hit the track. Did a slow run and the heat does get to me. Was surprised to still see a few others running, including 2 uncles. Also met this tall and super lean (with gentle 6Ps!!!) ang mo lady runner.

Struggled towards the end and managed about 6km in 43mins. Glad that I get a bit of a tan. Yippeee! Hmmm .... wondering when will I regain sufficient fitness to run 10km or more ... and run somewhere further ...

Ok ... gonna snuggle up in bed for more reading..... :D

Almost there ....

Was doing a mental review of what i've done considering today marks the last day of my leave (boo hoo!).
Ok lah, I'm almost there with the room makeover. Left with the installation of the curtain brackets. I'm pretty happy with the end results ... at least the room is now more "live-able" and so less cluttered. So in a way I consider this very last minute project a success :) Of course post implementation, there is gonna be a Phase 2 which would be to change the lighting in my room. But that can wait ba ...

I also got to read, go for short runs, shop (when everyone else is at work! *evil laugh*) .... yah, this must sound very boring to most but yes, I'm boring :P and I do enjoy the past week just doing all these mundane stuff. Of course it doesn't beat going on a holiday but hey, at least I spent part of it on improving the quality of my living :P

Got to tabulate the total damage though .... *shiver*
_____________________________________________________

Did a 7km run late afternoon to round up this holiday. The sky was threatening to pour and it was drizzling when I started my warm up but by the time I finished my run 52mins later, the sun was back.

Left toe is giving me problem throughout the run, not a good sign. Will try taping the toe as per physiotherapist's instruction in my next run and note the difference (if any).

______________________________________________________

Almost there to the first day back at work. I'm trying hard not to feel too sian about it ... really tough man ... just the tot of the countless unread emails, the tons to follow-up .... *shiver uncontrollably*

ok ... better go enjoy the last few hours of my happiness

Botanic Gardens

Did a short run today to Botanic Gardens. Weather was cool and the sun took its time to peek out from the clouds this mrn, hence I could start the run late. Didn't realise the distance to BG is soooo short ! It was like 3+km only (though I was panting my lungs out :P) ... am so glad to be at BG. I took my time to run walk in the premises, mainly strolling along the beautiful pathway. I much prefer BG during the weekday mrns when there are fewer people about.

There were 3 small groups of primary school students out on an excursion, think the teachers brought them out to understand nature and answer some of the questions in their science textbooks. There were of course the unmistakable pockets of tourists. The most common would be the ang mo women out with their toddlers or just ang mo women runners. Also saw a small group of ang mo ladies learning the tai ji from some chinese man whom in my humble opinion isn't doing a great job imparting the skill :P

I spent some time just sitting on a bench looking up at the tree crowns forming a nice shade for the area beneath. The leaves were yellow and beautiful ... its very serene just seating there and quietly admiring the view.

Think I spent an hour in the garden just walking and cooling down before I head back, running just 1km before i gave up and walked the rest of the way home.

By the time I left the garden the sun was out. Hope I get a little tan from this short run hehe

I rather be a roasted pig :P

Just another day ...

in paradise .....

Again woke up early (what's up man, i'm suppose to be on holiday!! argh!!! and I sleep later than usual). Friend overslept and so started the run late. It was meant to be a short run anyway since I'm dead beat, nursing a slight headache and friend can't run long. So we managed to do 4km. 30mins. Such a slow pace and yet we felt so breathless ! *slap forehead*

Was at another gym outlet for the spin class and wow, many of the gals there are really fit. Not to mention the to-die-for bods, they spun like some mean machines. Spinning away at high cadence (at supposedly high resistance) and yet seem like they can go on forever *faint*. While I was struggling (thankfully hidden at the side of the dark room) with the spin, trying my utmost best to "catch up" while heaving away :P For once I felt so out of place in the spin class ... I felt like such a newbie and totally unfit hehehe

With my recent decline in fitness, which can be apparent from my runs and spin sessions, I can't help to question whether age is really catching up with me and I'm feeling the effects :P

Just back from the physiotherapy. Haven't been there for a while and I almost forgot how painful the deep tissue massage can be. Of course it wasn't as bad as before, but definitely worse than the previous time when I was there. Guess the calves are indeed tight. Also told him about my left toe pain due to the bunion. He taught me how to tape the toe so I'll try his method and run tomorrow. See whether it helps.

WorryingScenario Planning

I realised that sometimes its not that others dun understand me, its that I do not take the time to allow them to. I build a wall and brush them aside. I also do not have the patience to explain myself clearly, expecting people to understand me from the start.
If only I had made more effort, if only I had slow down, pause and reflect, situation might not have been as bad ?

I had dinner with Dad last night. Just dad. Mom is away and for once we had dinner together alone without mom. It was a simple dinner and dad was his usual self yakking away about history and the past. In the past I would have just brushed him off and ignored him, but last night I regarded him as someone else's dad and gave him the respect and just quietly listened. Though I don't quite understand most of what he was saying, i made the effort to show some interest, and responded at appropriate times in the conversation. He has aged considerably. How much longer does he have ? No one can tell. His memory is fading rapidly, and strength definitely a fraction of the past. Like some who thinks about death, I too think about old age, and the inevitable path ... not just for myself, but my parents. Its morbid but its also preparation for what's to come, eventually. Most people do not just drop dead (uhm, I consider that lucky in a way) ... they go through a period of suffering. When I see my parents in recent months, I am constantly reminded that time isn't on their side. That's why it frustrates me when mom refused to heed my advice to live a little! To travel and see the world, while she is still able and strong and not wait til it is too late. On the other hand I must also prepare for the future. Not just mine but theirs. When they are old and sick, there must be sufficient funds to keep them going and make sure they are taken care of. And similarly when I grow old .. considering that I have no family of my own ... i must be self sufficient. My worst nightmare would be collecting tin cans in the coffeeshops round island (a friend prefers collecting cardboard. Alright by me since that ensure there wouldn't be any turf war haha). But how can I ensure that doesn't happen ? Prudence is one. Growing my $$ is another. Ah, the former is a habit that I have to learn, the latter, an almost insurmountable task since I know nuts about investment. Hey, working in the financial industry doesn't make one an expert in that field! :P

And what if I'm not even healthy to go round island to collect tin cans ? What if I'm old and sickly ? What if I have osteoporosis (which seems very likely in my case :( ) ? Darn, I know worrying doesn't help the situation. Ok, maybe I shouldn't say worrying. More like scenario planning :P

Was reading in the papers today about some people spending beyond their means. I'm shocked that there are imbeciles out there who earn $4K and lived a life of luxury such as upgrading to an executive flat, buying $10K entertainment system, with maid and all. And don't forget this is on top of supporting a family including kids! They chalked up over $100k in debts and had to seek help. Geez ... unbelievable really.

No doubt I'm debt free and far from situations above. I can't quit worrying about financial freedom when I grow older. What if an illness strike me before I'm even old ? That will almost definitely wipe out my savings? What if its my parents ? Everything boils down to $$. There are always conflicting thoughts. One day I might just tell myself to live each day as it comes as I might be dead tmr. I will buy what I want (which is most often the case *oops*- but seldom big ticket items like a laptop :P) and tell myself I shouldn't ill-treat myself considering i work. But there are also days when I worry that I might end up being the tin can ah po. I'm sure I'm not the only one with such worries, but I guess mine are more magnified coz I'm a true blue pessimist.

Ah well, enough worrying for the day. I should relax and just enjoy this wonderful sunday. I could hear the birds chirping. Just hope the sky will hold and not pour again (not when I'm heading out!)
:p

Start the Day Run

Realised I need very little sleep ... slept close to 2 and woke up at 6. Finished reading another of the Ken Follet book (Jackdaws) and pulled myself up to hit the track.

Weather was cool (can't tan!) as it was still early ... realised my pace was too fast for me when I hit the 1km mark in 6:35mins .. no good, i should be running at 8min pace. It got laborious and I was struggling and had to stop 20mins into the run for a 2 min walk. No good! Prefer to run with company as it helps to keep the boredom at bay, time passes faster when u have someone to talk to or listen to hehe.

Managed a 7km run in 50mins. That works out to 7+min pace. Right calf has been tight the past few days and the bunion problem is back but definitely not as painful ... other than that, i feel alright. I always love the feeling after a workout ... though short, but the perspiration, the cooling down ... it just makes one feel most alive. I am sure most of us can relate to that.

Anyway, time to make an appointment for a deep tissue massage.

Can't map my run as mapmyrun doesn't show the park connector ... hmmm

I'm ready for the next run ... whenever that would be. Hope to squeeze in a few more runs before i return to the harsh reality of working life :P I hate april for its the month when I will again be facing some disappointment ... haiz. Anyway, wondering when (if ever) I can re-join the CBD run.

____________________________________

Today will be going to buy my furniture .... hope I can get them to deliver asap instead of waiting the usual three working days. Wish me luck! :P

Already ?!

Only managed to squeeze in another short short run of 3km on Easter mrn. Again had grand plans to run but mind was weak .... only pulled myself up when sms came in from friend suggesting a run. Glad that I managed to get some sun as it was already past 8am when we started running. I'm getting disgustingly fair and I'm so not happy about it. Prefer the times when I was close to chao da thanks to the kayak and swim .... piggy KJ must go back to doing those ba ...

And received the email about SBR. So fast??? Its still a good 5 months away .... but geez, time really flies!!! Shld I sign up for it ? Gosh I'm not sure. I hope to ... but will I ?

Let's wait and see ...

Freedom Day #6

Been busy busy ! Time flies when u r having fun :P

After getting my new laptop, I decided on a whim to give my room a new look (there just isn't any space to house my new toy comfortably). Immediately after making that decision, I started work. That explains why I have been so busy (but with a purpose!)

Spent a day packing, clearing out the space (and found some stuff I tot I had dumped long ago) and moving the furniture outta the room. Spent another day giving the walls a fresh coat (make it 2) of paint.

Then had to hunt for some new economical furniture for the room.

Thankfully I have two wonderful wonderful friends who made time to help me out. I'm so fortunate and thankful for their help especially the friend who spent her Easter helping to paint my room! Not many people will lend a hand (and I dun blame them. Why would anyone want to spend a holiday helping with such back breaking work!) and I'm really glad she did. Without her help think I would still be struggling with the paint (never really painted before). She also helped with the room measurements, dishing out important tips and advices for me about the furniture dimensions etc. I'll be so handicapped without her!

Went to IKEA twice but didn't find a table that suits me ... but other than that I already have an idea what to get. Trying to create space in my minute room so really don't wish to pack the room with too many pieces of furniture. The less the merrier (this means i have to dump more stuff and buy less! :P)

Still got loads to do ... hang in there KJ!

My New Toy ...

I've been dreading to turn on my computer recently because it just takes too much out of me just to login to MSN, to surf the net or to check email. My system just crawls and it is such a torture and there is no way one can do any real work effectively on that machine.

So after loads of contemplation for the past months ... I finally took the plunge today and got myself a computer! The initial intention was just to get as cheap a desktop as I can get so as to meet my basic needs but a walk in Funan this afternoon in the company of a good friend turned out several good deals. There were some mid-range notebooks that were going at pretty competitive prices, and they were sticking to the promotional price given during the recent IT show!!

Thanks to the good friend who helped me to analyse which laptop is best, we finally decided on the Compaq Presario V3000 series.

Alright I'm not sure whether its a to-be discontinued range or what but heck it, its going at $1.6K (after adding 4GB RAM and 2 add'l years warranty), I really think its reasonable lah. And we even got the saleslady to throw in one slipcase that retailed at $29 FOC!! Again thanks to the friend who suggested that (think i'm too one-track mind ... dunno how to bargain nor negotiate. But nevermind at least I learn how to today!)

So I'm happy that I'm now blogging with my new baby ... and with the widescreen (though small) I'll be able to start watching DVDs on it. Yippeee!!! Cham lah, books to read, movies to watch, room to re-deco. Not enough time!! I need more leave!! :P

The One

We fit each other well. There weren't any baggages.

No nagging pain...

No burden ...

The spring in my legs.

The weightlessness that I feel.

I feel renewed.

Mizuno WaveRider 10

Yes I know. I started off in WR and now I'm back after 2 years ? What's with that ?

Well .... its with the trial & error, the pain & anguish with each change that I realise which is still the best. Sometimes in life, you just have to try a few to know which one suits u most... and without the bumps, you wouldn't realise which is the one for u. (I'm only talking about shoes tho hehe)
Its almost like coming full circle. I know some people didn't think Mizuno is good, nor for long distance running, nor that its durable blah blah. Yes I get that. But what to do ? My very wide feet just feels snug in it. ;) And anyway my distance is a yawn so distance is definitely the least of my worry now ;)

Ok, its my very first run in my brand new shoes so its still too early to say whether I will have problems with it. But so far I feel very comfy in the shoes. And the bunion and left toe haven't started whining yet. *cross my fingers*

And I'm finally wearing a pair of female running shoes! I've been offered men's shoes because of my wide feet and the salesperson always assure me that it doesn't matter to be running in a men's shoes. Well, the person I talked to (whom I still think know what he is saying) told me otherwise and even condemned the fellow who sold me Kayanos :P Anyway, I'm glad I went back to him to seek his advice coz he seem to know what he is talking about. Let's see how it goes though ...

Tonight is the first run in over a month. I'm glad I arranged to run with someone, so I couldn't back out of it. I seriously lack the discipline and motivation, so thanks so much for not minding to run with the fat old lady. :) It was a cool night since it had been raining since afternoon, so made the run extremely comfy and easy. The company definitely helps to make the run so much less mundane. Running alone to and back the track is really no joke ... can bore u to tears :P

I need to run more! :)

Temporary Freedom

First time in my working life that I have leave to clear before the FY (previously the balance could be encashed but not anymore). I forced myself to take leave from today onwards for a couple of days ... and anyway I needed the break.

Woke up with a headache (yes, I realised I always have headaches whenever I am not at work!!) but managed to go to the library to return my long overdue books. It is wonderful to have the library all to myself (almost). The reading room (called the Quiet Room) was deserted for once and I spent some peaceful time (oh what a joy!) reading. Shiokz! This is an even more economical way then reading in a kopi joint! :P

Also managed to catch a movie at Vivocity with a friend. Wow, when was the last time u managed to catch a movie at $6? Not me!! So was pleasantly surprised when we realised there was a promo if we paid with the HSBC card (offer valids for Mon-Wed only - in case u r thinking of going too). We caught The Spiderwick Chronicles and it was pretty entertaining.

Not sure why but I've taken leave on and off but today was different. I felt more carefree and happy to be out on a weekday. So liberating. Probably because I have company today so the joy was shared haha ...
Some thoughts came to me today ... its been so long ... maybe I shld do something about it ...

Ok anyway ... time to kick back and relax somemore ... ;)

The Pillars of the Earth

Increasingly I found myself not finishing the books that I borrowed. I think its age or the diminishing intelligence (haha!) that I often do not finish a book either coz I just find them a bore or I just don't find them engaging.

Several months back I read in the papers about this journalist's sentiments about not having the time to enjoy her favourite pastime - reading. And even when she does read, it is for the purpose of work, not leisure. In it she mentioned a few books that she wanted to read and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet was one of them.

I made reservations for this book (Bless NLB for the very useful and convenient feature!!!) and got my hands on it couple of weeks back. The story, set in ancient times in the midst of civil war, is an excellent read. Its a long time since I picked up a book and dread putting it down. As this book is wayyyyyy overdue, I just spent yesterday finishing up the book. (yes I know, i should be out running instead of lazing in bed reading .. guilty as charged! :P)

This is apparently one of his most popular books and I'm not questioning this claim! Can't wait to lay my hands on the sequel, World Without End.

KL 7-9 Mar

I just came back from my department retreat in KL.

Initially was concerned about the possible massive jams at the checkpoint no thanks to that JI fugitive, and the M'sia elections added to the concerns. Safety was of utmost concern in many of our minds ... but everything had been paid for and the big boss decided to go ahead ... so everything went ahead as planned.

Thankfully the jam at Tuas wasn't as bad as I imagined. It took a while for the coach to reach the checkpoint, but other than that, everything went smoothly and all was fine & dandy.

Talking about the coach, everyone was embarrassed about the quality of the coach we were in. While stuck in the jam at the customs, we were all comparing the other coaches lined up behind us and we could only laughed at our own "predicament" and the lack of class in our mode of transport :P We even joked about tearing away the tag pasted in front of our coach identifying our organisation to avoid further humiliation! Ok lah, it was fun just laughing at ourselves.

The retreat wasn't exciting ... there really wasn't much to do there (shopping was atrociously boring & the food sux big time - talk about spending loads on their restaurants, I think I rather have our own hawker food or cze char :P). But it was good to spend some time with colleagues and chat about stuff other than work. And good to use the opportunity to know some of the newer colleagues. Imagine there are some whom I don't even know their names!

The trip also brought back fond memories about the last time i was in KL - Pacesetters 2007. I still remember fondly the evening we were stuck in a massive downpour that came unannounced and got us drenched. We had to seek shelter in this little hut right outside a construction site! And guess what, I was just recounting this very funny incident to one of my colleagues (who is also a very dear friend) that i realised that this construction site is now a brand new shopping mall which opened like just 3 months ago! My hotel is very near to this mall so everytime I passed by this mall on my way back to the hotel, I will always smile to myself and recall the fond memories I had with this gang of good friends then. How time flies ....

We flew back on jetstar / tiger airways (yes, budget air some more!!!! *roll eyes*) and its my first time on one. It is truly no frills and the air craft seems a tad old but still ok lah ... nothing that got me very worried except when taking off when the plane rocked from side to side. It got one of my younger colleagues worried and my friend and I just laughed it off. As my friend said, if anything were to happen, it would be quick. hahahahah

Oh, and my group won the first prize in one of those games which earned us a $300 dining voucher! Yippeee! Can grow more bui! :P

All in all, a good break. Thankfully the streets in KL were safe (pretty quiet actually, we figured many have returned to their hometowns for voting?) and we didn't encounter any issues or scares there.
