CBD Run

Almost couldn't make it to the CBD run last night. Was tied up at work and getting super the sian ... checked the watch and I had about 10 mins to get changed and rushed down to the starting point.

Thankfully managed to make it in time and Shutehelup even commented I look like I just woke up (duh!!). I wanted to run the route that they did last week (I missed the run due to flu) and thanks to Shut who agreed to lead me on that route. Very happy to see bikerchic last night too, who managed to pluck herself out of her piling school work, assignments, presentations, tutorials and all to join us for a run. Miss ya gal, glad to see u! :) So off we went, with Shut giving instructions on the route (bikerchic commented Shut sounded like a commander haha) with bikerchic, charmane, don and myself running this route, while the rest went for the usual CBD run.

The pace of the gals were tooo fast for me and I had such a hard time running at their pace. Poor bikerchic had to slow down many times just so tat i could catch up (pai seh!). Don was behind us plugged in to his ear phones so he couldn't hear our chats nor our asking whether he is ok most of the time haha ...

Total distance covered: 10.5km (according to Shut)
Total time taken: 1hr 10++mins

Soooo shagged by the run but was just glad that I managed to go for the run.

To Full or Not To Full - or Am I A Fool ? :P

Finally received email from company yesterday evening to go ahead to register under corporate for SCSM 06. Logged in to the website and I got stuck ... nope, not technical glitches, but I was 2 minds about whether to register for half or full. My initial intention was to go half. Don't think i'm conditioned to go full yet. Its double the effort for what I did for AHM! How can tahan?!?! But then again, another part of me is also saying, just go slow, walk more run less, u can still complete even if it takes 6 hours!

I consulted Teelee & his advice was to go for half : "don overdo it this year" he said. I thought that was very wise and coming from Teelee, the speedster, and "running professional" he shouldn't be wrong. Anyway, the last thing I want is to get injured or kill my passion for running!

However, I'm still tempted and with aichai now up-ing my interest by pledging $5 per km if i were to run full, I'm getting more curious about the prospect of running full. Is there sufficient time to train ? And what constitutes a full marathon training anyway ? I have barely 3 months left to train for full marathon. Come to think of it, rationally, I really doubt I can do it.

Anyway, just some random tots early in the morning .... will appreciate all your advices/comments. Let me know what you think ok ?

:)
Cheers!

Maiden AHM

Few months ago, before I joined SGRunners, I never thought I could ever run a half marathon . This, however, became a reality on 27 Aug 2006 when I completed the Sheares' Bridge Run & Army Half Marathon 2006.

I woke up at 3am and was relieved to feel well enough to go for the AHM. Have been fighting and then nursing a flu attack for the entire week and had been worried that I would have to miss the AHM. Thankfully, with all the support, wonderful advices & concern from all of you, I managed to keep the flu in control. (Thanks everyone!)

Left the house at 4am to meet Gentle, Taz, Junie & Doraemon_Red at the bus stop near my place. THANK YOU Gentle for giving me a lift to Raffles City and THANK YOU Junie & Taz for helping to arrange this transport and including me! *BOW* Everyone was in an upbeat mood and chatting away happily and enthusiastically about the upcoming run. We reached Raffles City at about 4:45pm and by then the place was thronged with people in their running gear.

We met the rest of the SGRunners at the Tan Kim San fountain and chatted for a while before proceeding to the starting line. I wasn't jittery or anything, but was just a little apprehensive about running a 21km alone. I also wasn't looking fwd to running in such a huge group, it would be lots of jostling, sweaty bodies and fighting for air :P

Thankfully it wasn't a long wait before the Chief of Army flagged off the run. It took me about 3 over minutes i think before i actually crossed the start line .. and off we went.

I kept to a very slow pace of 7:30min/km and kept reminding myself to go SLOW, not wanting to repeat my mistake at Shape run. Thankfully the soothing, jazz music that I have organised in my Running Playlist in my ipod helps to keep me on track. Junie was very kind and kept me company throughout, asking whether I'm ok and reminding me not to push too hard. Thanks Junie! So sorry that I was quiet throughout the entire run coz I had to concentrate on listening to my body, monitoring for any signs of unwell and especially with my gastric problem (brought on by the anti-biotics that I was taking *mumble mumble at the stupid anti-biotics*), I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to yak.

Its a good experience running along CBD area, passing by Lau Pa Sat, the route we sometimes took for CBD run, so early in the morning. There were still people hanging out from the revelry the night before. They looked kind of uncertain seeing such a huge crowd of us running along the road. I kept to my slow pace and many runners overtook me. I reminded myself that this is normal and that shouldn't trigger me to quicken my pace. Anyway the distance is long and I have to conserve my energy if I wish to complete the race comfortably. We saw Bee running alone and considering all three of us were about the same pace, we ended running together. Many times one of us will overtake the others only to be overtaken shortly after. It was good pacing them and helps me to at least take my mind off my flu and gastric momentarily. We trotted up Sheares' Bridge, up the ECP and towards East Coast Park. The run was relaxing except that it was just TOO CROWDED.

I constantly checked my watch to make sure I'm keeping to my pace. The night before, I have jotted down my estimated timing for every 4 km interval in a small piece of paper and plastered it to the back of my ipod to help me keep track of my timing.

I didn't stop for water until almost towards the half way mark. After drinking the ice cold water (too cold for comfort!! especially with a weak gastric) and taking a 2min walk, I felt more refreshed and started to increase my pace. Junie was with me all the while until much later when she caught up with me to tell me that she couldn't catch up and reminded me to take care and don't push too hard. (Thanks sweet Junie buddy jie jie! Really appreciate your concern and help!) So there I was, running alone, with my music keeping me company, and the tons of strangers running alongside me. At one point near Nicoll Highway, the army boys were out spraying water at the runners. I had to quickly avert the spurts of water by running behind the boys so that I would not get wet. I was already feeling cold and slightly shivering and if I were to be sprayed by water I would definitely feel too cold to continue with the run, and most likely to come down with a high fever thereafter!

At one point I spotted sxuanjing but missed her in the sea of runners before I could say hello. Also passed Angeline and managed to just ask whether her knees were ok before i proceeded. When I passed Orchard Road, I knew I was near and so had renewed strength to proceed. Met flip and sv along the way and said my hellos. There were many traffic stops along the way and it gave me some time to catch my breath. But also made many of us lose our momentum and all the start / stop can be very disruptive to the runners.

The run brought us to Clemenceau Road, Havelock Road, Outram Road, South Bridge Road and back to the finishing line. Nearing the end of the run, I tried to pace flip but she was way too fast for me. She was going strong and increasing her pace right to the very end. Well done flip! I mustered whatever strength I had left and sprinted for the finishing line crossing it in 2hrs 19++mins. Not bad in my own opinion since I was gunning for anything below 3hrs with 2hrs 30mins being my stretch target. *pat on back* And I got my very first medal from a sports event!!! *excited*

Met up with the rest of the sgrunners who have finished very early on (teelee - 1hrs 25mins and the top 19th position!! *kow tow*, DO/DR - 1hrs 30+mins, cfred - 1hrs 45mins and many others who all hit sub 2 - roentgen, brokie, ronnie, aichai, charmane, shark etc)

Well done everyone for a good run! Many of the runners achieved PB and I am really really happy for them! Cheers and to many more good runs!

After the run, had breakfast at Marina Square, then lunch at Kovan (hahahaha, just keep eating) before heading home for a much required ZZZZZZ.

Now which half marathon should I go for next ? :)

War Zone...

I'm now at war, yes, war with the flu bug. Wake up feeling sick everyday and asking myself whether today is the day I ought to see doc to take MC. But then again, not very useful to see doc when the virus hasn't fully attacked as the med given will be mild and ineffective anyway. So here i am, still at work and still hoping that the flu will not bug me .... and just surrender ....

Thanks to everyone for your advices and concern! I'm now doing everything to conquer the flu bug and thanks to all your advices I'm ....
  1. keeping myself hydrated -> keep rushing to the toilet! :P
  2. religiously taking my Vit C every morning
  3. taking flu med
  4. drinking honeyed water (not manuka though - finished it liao - should go buy it later)
  5. taking vegetables & fruits (orange, pear, guava - yup, been told this has loads of Vit C!)
  6. sleeping early (hit the sack by 9pm for the past 2 days, will continue to do that if possible)
  7. laying off running (for the past 2 days. But hope to run soon!!!)
  8. avoiding junk food (*WAILLLLL* this is the hardest part for me, a food junkie! :( )
3 more days to AHM .....

Nope, I'm not gunning for any PB (although technically, since this is my first AHM, any timing, even if it is 4 hours, will be my PB hahaha). I just want to go and enjoy myself. Start slow, pace myself (have enough control to run at MY own pace), and have sufficient energy left to complete the last few km without heaving and panting like I'm suffering a heart attack (I hate the breathlessness feeling). Most importantly is to experience the whole run, to at least know that I'm able to complete it. :)

Ok, enough nonsense. Hope to see you all on Sunday ! Must wait for me for the post AHM makan ok ?? :P
OOps, there I go again, thinking about food haha

Flu Flu Shoooo!!!

Yup, had to miss my fav CBD run last night due to feeling under the weather. Was hoping to brave it and go for the run but by evening I felt like I was having a fever, so thought i shouldn't risk it. Instead went home early and was in bed before 9.

Can feel the onset of flu now .... the usual symptoms ... SHIT!!!!!! With just a few days to AHM and my very FIRST AHM and now I'm feeling flu-ish :( and with flu it always take me 2 weeks to recover (yah, i feel damn weak, y always sick ah?!?!?) I'm just so ..... arghhhhhh *pull hair*

Another Anihowz Run

Rested for 2 days and feeling very restless and guilty for not running, so went for a run with teelee on Monday night right after work. Intended to do a 10km run around my area, and in order not to tax teelee with coming up with a route, we decided to go where our hearts fancy as we pass each junction.

Few minutes into the run, saw a familiar figure running in the opposite direction towards us and upon closer inspection, realised that it was none other than FBB doing his ninja run! We crossed paths, said our "Hi"s. FBB decided to join us for our run to nowhere and we proceeded on, heading towards Sengkang.

We ran around Sengkang and Ponggol area, clocking about 12km in all in 1hr 26mins. Its good to be able to catch up with FBB after so long. Am glad to see that he has recovered well and is able to run the whole distance without any nagging pain. Well done, FBB! Happy for you!
:)

We had dinner at Hougang green. Chatted a while before going home.

Thanks to teelee for accompanying me for a run !!

Weekend Blog

Feeling tired from the hectic 2 days haha ... just woke up from a nap, had my dinner and about to start blogging and realised .... i'm brain dead :P so unlike tradition when I would blog by day, decide to condense everything into one blog ... oh no, i'm catching Teelee's lazy-to-blog bug :P

Sat - Cfred's birthday celebration. We (cfred, teelee, roentgen, loneshark, cosmic, kay, shutehelup) had jap buffet at suki sushi at Orchard Cineleisure. I have never been to suki sushi so must thank teelee for that suggestion. Service was slow, queue was super long (but we didn't wait coz we were directed to Orchard from Selegie because that outlet just didn't have space for 8 of us), food was ok. We were seated right at the entrance (well, we can't be choosers when we did not have to queue, and 2 tables for 4 each have been reserved for us) and we could see the tv showing all the movie previews. Roentgen asked how we could be at Orchard Cineleisure and not catch a movie ?

So off we went to collect our race packs from Toa Payoh Safra. Thankfully there wasn't a crowd and we breezed through our collection. The guys were stuck at the Safra Running Club station, considering whether to sign up as a member and enjoy the perks like reimbursement of a portion of the registration fees for Mizuno, AHM and SCSM. Not to forget the discounts for some of the shoes! There was also a counter selling Motorola phones with one gold one from Dolce & Gabana! We commented that we dun really like gold and the salesman actually said we could just buy the phone for display at home (Hahlo!!! Wake up!!! *roll eyes*)

With our race packs securely under our arms, we headed back to Orchard Cineleisure to catch the comedy "Click". Been wanting to watch that show so am glad that I managed to catch it. Fried noodle (charmane) who was not able to join us for the lunch, joined us for the movies. The movie was alright, about this universal remote controller that allows the lead actor (in this case Adam Sandler) to skip through mundane or unpleasant events in his life. Except that the remote controller actually learns his habits and automatically helps him to skip through many life events so much so that he missed many major events in his own life (e.g. growing up years of his children, the passing of his dad, losing his wife to someone else etc.) Some of the jokes were pretty lame (*yawns*) but all in all I still find the show pretty alright (hey! I didn't fall asleep! hooray!) with several touching scenes.

Angeline joined us after the movies for dinner (wah, seem to be hanging out more with youngsters now ! ) before calling it a night in preparation for the NBRR the following day.

Was a simple bd celebration for cfred, hope he enjoyed himself. Many happy returns to him and may he be happy always!

Sun - NBRR
I felt like I was going NBRR for the run as I was out of the house, travelling to Sentosa at the same time as some actual runners (saw a couple in running gear on the same bus or walking toward the train station). The road leading to Sentosa was jam packed by the time we (charmane, teelee, loneshark and myself) were there and we were lucky to get to the starting point before the flag off. Am happy to see so many familiar faces and managed to take a few pics of some of them before the horn sounded and they went on their way.

I wanted to cheer the sgrunners on at the mid point and so wanted to station myself at the end of the beach leg, where they will likely be most tired. Charmane & charlotte were kind enough to accompany me, the DR, along. However, 10 minutes into the walk we reckoned we were not gonna make it in time and so backtracked and stationed ourselves at the end of the trail, just 500m from the finishing line. Am disappointed to miss taking shots of ultraman and TLR as they were too fast (or I'm too slow in my reflexes) and whizzed past before I could take a pic of them. Subsequently did my best to take as many of the sgrunners as possible, but I still missed some (e.g. cfred, balasing, and many more - apologies to them).

We took some group pics and proceeded to Tanjong Beach where sv organised a picnic. Some went for a dip, some played frisbee and beach volleyball and the rest including yours truly simply sat around and nua. Got to thank sv for organising. charmane for the drinks, loneshark for the bread and daisiki for the ham. Thanks all!

We later had our real lunch at Harbour front food court before returning home for our rest.

Chao-da liao ...

Tink I need to sleep more, feeling very zombie ...

SG River - Tg Rhu LSD

With Sunday being the NBRR, we decided to have our last LSD (before the AHM) on Friday night, so that those NBRR runners can have a rest on Sat before their race.

The route (from SG River to Tg Rhu and back) which covers 21km was carefully planned by Roentgen. The meticulous way in which he went about the plan, even sending us a map on the route and suggested parking location, is simply commendable! Thanks Roentgen!

As I have missed Thursday's run due to work, and the past 2 days of accumulated stress at work, just made me longed for this run with the gang. Knowing that I might potentially be held up at work and possibly missed the run, Teelee and Roentgen were very very kind & considerate enough to push the start time of the run to 8pm. Thanks Teelee & Roentgen!!! *BOW* really appreciate it!!!

With the Friday night traffic, we were caught in the jam and only managed to reach the starting point at SG River at 8:30pm. The attendees tonight are : Roentgen, Teelee, Junie, Cosmic, Daisiki, Charmane, Shutehelup & yours truly. We started with a comfortable pace of 6:40min/km to 7+min/km. Many of us started the run feeling hungry and it was indeed a torture running past all the seafood restaurants and cafes along Clarke Quay & Esplanade!! While many were dining (or should i just say feasting) on chili crab, we could only joke about running off with their food :P Think the temptation of the food, hallucinating about the food calling out to us, just made all of us pick up pace so as to get away as far from the temptation as possible. We only managed to breathe a sigh of relief when we hit Marina Promenade where darkness & the countless number of couples sitting by the benches, grass patch greeted us . We kept to a comfortable pace trotting along and reached National Stadium, Tg Rhu & skirted along the waters in Tg Rhu. That took us about 1:40+.

There were several short walk breaks and everyone seemed comfortable and ready to push it slightly. With all the stress of the work week behind me, I just jogged along, lost in my own world (frankly, i wasn't thinking of anything), simply enjoying the tranquility of the evening, the still of the night (unfortunately the wind was pretty weak tonight) and enjoyed just running. I was also trying to increase my cadence without widening my stride, to see how I can handle that without causing any discomfort or pain to my shins. It sort of worked because I was told my pace was relatively faster but I wasn't feeling uncomfortable or breathless.

We reached the end point, 21km later, in 2:43hrs. A good run by my standards! I was able to push myself slightly more by increasing my pace slightly, without the super breathless feeling (which i absolutely hate!!!!). However, at the end of the run, I could feel my legs aching, which is something rare! Must have pushed myself slightly harder today. But I feel good after the run, especially after the non-activity for 2 straight days! Yes!

Shut brought us to this malay eatery along River Valley Road called Spize. Wow! The place was packed!!! We managed to get a seat and ordered their limejuice, which was served in this huge glass. I ordered their Tom Yam chicken soup with beehoon. The tom yam was surprisingly pretty good and I cleaned out the dish. I saw that their milo dinosaur was really impressive, served with those same huge glasses, with generous amount of milo powder packed on top of the drink!!! And it only costs $2! I told myself I just had to have one (darn the diet! :P), and Roentgen & I each ordered one after finishing our dinner. I have to say I enjoyed the milo dinosaur tremendously!! It was YUMMILICIOUS!!! Real potent stuff! I enjoyed it thoroughly and was thinking this is a great place to hang out past midnite! With great food (their prata, murtabak looked very yummy too!!!) to boot!

After stuffing our stomach, we headed home with kind teelee giving Cosmic a ride all the way back to the east, before sending Shut, Junie, Charmane & myself back to our place. Special thanks to Shut for sending me all the way back to my doorstep. Really thanks a lot Shut & Teelee for your consideration and ensuring that I reach home safely. Cheers!
:)

A great run to loosen me up, replace the unhappy events this week with the happier encounters and company of the sgrunners. Thanks for the great company gals & guys! Once again, THANKS to ROENTGEN for organizing this run, and picking a few of us up at the CBD run start point. And to TEELEE for providing your reliable transport service home! :)

To more great runs!!

Enjoyable Tues

Ahhhh ... if only everyday could be this good :)

Had a very hectic Monday so it was a reprieve to NOT have any meetings on Tuesday. Decided last minute to go on half day leave in the afternoon to settle some matters especially since Wed onwards I will be busy at work. So might as well treat myself to a relaxing afternoon off.

Managed to leave office only at 1:30pm, had a relaxing lunch at Subway Marina Square (very empty! So was able to eat a veg wrap and read the Runner's World magazine that Roentgen lent me from eons ago ...) Did some shopping and can't find a decent thing at NIKE (very disappointed with their lack of new range!!! What is this??) and then went on to the gym for my personal training session (last second before membership expires). The session was tiring, the PT was trying to show me all the exercises I could do to train my legs which according to him can help with my running. But aiya, I'm not keen with weight training and without supervision, I'm seldom at the gym lifting weights. Its just too troublesome having to worry about form and injury if not carried correctly.

After the session, went for a SPA session with Loneshark. Thanks to sharkie for inviting me (after learning that I'm going on leave) to the spa at Raffles Town Club. Frankly I couldn't remember much of the body massage because I K.O. almost as soon as I laid on the bed :P Later when I awoke, the masseur commented that my calves are very tight! Must be my running ba. She suggested to go for foot reflexology etc. Ok, shall treat myself to one after the AHM. Prolly need to consider several of the sgrunners' advice to go see a sports doc regarding my shin problems once and for all too. Ok, after AHM. Right now, cannot risk to have anything untoward happens to my legs. Not that I'm some athelete going for PB during AHM, but it is my FIRST AHM leh .... must at least go and experience it and have fun in the process!

After the spa, we headed straight to meet the sgrunners for the CBD run. As many of us at the back (charlotte, cosmic, teelee, charmane, divey & myself) were not keen on the jetty route, Divey suggested we run the Sheares' Bridge-Promenade-Esplanade route. We ran at a relaxing pace and slowly Divey and I were left at the rear of the pack. I still enjoyed running this route as compared to the jetty route. At least I get to see the sea, the skyline etc (albeit with construction ongoing at Esplanade) but at least I get to see something! As compared to darkness, trees and shrubs at the jetty route.

Total distance covered :According to divey is about 11km
Total time taken: 1 hr 10mins (i think, can't remember :P)

We were the last to return and some of them were already eating the yummy brownie that FD bought for us (Thanks FD!!!). After a BD celebration with cake (courtesy of teelee) for cfred whose bd is just a couple of days away, we went to have our dinner at Maxwell. Somehow guessed we spent too long a time chatting at the start point that by the time we finished our dinner and head home, it was close to 10pm!

As usual, got to say a BIG BIG THANK YOU to TEELEE for driving the HSP folks back!!! *bow* On our way back, I realised the toenail that I've been waiting for months for it to drop off was about to come off! I was soooo excited but the guys in the TLV just wouldn't hear of it!! Squirming and looking away from my toe .... I finally pulled it off and showed them the toenail and my joy and relief was greeted only with utter disgust from the guys (Loneshark, Shut, Kay & Taz) Aiyo!!!! WIMPS!!!!!!! They were like looking away, closing their eyes and saying it is damn gross ... huh ???? What's so scary about a dropped off nail really ?? :P

Got home real late ... been a long but fruitful day ....

Anihowz Run

As usual, suffering from the Monday Bluez. Feeling kinda down and some unhappy memories crept in sucking the energy out of me. Not to mention a hectic day at work with back to back meetings, by the time I'm done at work, its 7pm!! Needless to say, walking to the gym couldn't be furthest from my mind (I really got to sign up for a gym nearest to my workplace - sigh, $$$$$ :( )

Teelee, who was going to do a recovery run, was kind enough to wait for me to get home and do the run together. Started the run at 8pm and realised my HRM wasn't registering my HR. 1 min into the run, my HRM hang!!! Wah lau eh! Just the day before a few of us were just discussing about how common a problem it is that our POLAR HRM hang and it has to happen to me again!!! I just did a good week of workout the week before, hitting 180+% of my weekly calorie expenditure (ok ok, i know how inaccurate it is, but I just like to indulge myself in such fantasy that i'm working hard :P) and with the reset of my HRM, all information was gone!!! :( Had to spend the next few minutes trying to run & reconfigure my HRM.

My body wasn't responding well to the slow run and my legs were aching and feeling really heavy. Really hate this kind of feeling as it would mean that I wouldn't be able to run well at all. Teelee was facing similar problems, complaining that all his running form is haywire, he felt tired, and the worse is he seemed to have hit a wall. That he has no motivation and was worried how he could regain his motivation ... any kind souls out there who could advise him pls ?

We had no routes in mind and didn't know where to run. So I suggested we just run where our legs take us (and hence the name of this run). We would make a decision where to go at each junction, each crossroad (which is what I normally do during my lone runs in the past). We ran straight from my place to AMK, ran around NYP, entered a side gate to cut the distance and hit the AMK industrial park. We then took the Yio Chu Kang road back and even ran into some quiet residential area with many newly renovated houses (it seems). The area is quiet and seem so tranquil at night. We ended the run at Hougang Point for dinner.

Ordered dinner and the stall helpers (both of Chinese origin) asked me whether i had just exercised, and since they speak with such a thick accent, I had difficulties deciphering what they were saying to me or asking me. Not sure whether they said I should exercise more to lose weight or why i exercise and still look so big or watever. Ah well..... Then one of them even commented i should run longer, coz i don't seem to be sweating -_-" What the (#_$*(@(#*((*( Do I have to be subjected to all these crappy banter for a bowl of noodles ???

Anyway, it took me 10km to finally warm up my body sufficiently to run, but that was already the end of the run. Total time taken : 1hr 17mins.

Always feels much better after a run. I think I'm hooked to running on weekday nights. This is the reason why i like running now, running with friends help to clear your head, forget the daily struggles of life, the unhappiness or sian-ness that hit you unknowingly ... all these negative thoughts just seemed to be left behind as your legs bring you forward. Its rather symbolic really, moving forward and leaving the baggage behind. Therapeutic, isn't it ?

Thanks Teelee for the company, I know the pace is way too slow for u, even as a recovery run .... *bow*

Northern adventure: Point to Point Run

Please read Part 1 of this adventure here.

I was alongside Taz in the beginning of the run so as to start the group going. We ran past the normal Sengkang route, past the stretch of ulu road where big trucks lined the side of the road. This stretch of the road is really quiet and definitely a NO-NO run zone for lone runners especially during the early morning or nights. As we passed the remote LRT station (not sure the name) , Taz pointed to a road up the stairs which led us to ...... Jalan Kayu! Wow! I didn't know this route exist though we ran past it many times! Thanks Taz!!!

We ran past Jalan Kayu towards Seletar camp but instead of running inside, we skirted around it, running again along a secret route of Taz's! The road was quite narrow and was thick with vegetation (Taz pointed out to me the tapioca plants and recounted his interesting army days when he had to hack through such thick vegetation to clear the road). It was actually pretty dangerous to run there because we were running on the road and I can imagine the place to be really dark when light fades. The place will be shrouded in darkness, with just the light from the lamposts (if they work!!) and the moonlight. (Taz, pls dun run there alone when light is dim plssss).

As our journey continues, so is this FR which u can continue reading from HERE.

Part 4
of our journey ...

Final episode of our adventure.

Setting Things Straight ...

In the course of these few months, I have gone for several "ninja-runs" on my own with a few others. This seems to have incurred the wrath of many. I have received feedback about why he/she wasn't "invited", why never "jio", why ...... ??

I think it most appropriate to just blog about this to state my stand once and for all.

The reason why I never "jio" is because of the following:
  1. last minute run - I'm feeling down, I catch teelee (the ever trusty, can run anytime, anyday, anywhere cool dude) online and decided to go for a late evening (after 8pm) run near my place. Its easy for both of us coz we live closeby and he doesn't mind running at my pace.
  2. I'm a no-fuss gal - I am lousy at coordinating outings and I basically am just plain LAZY to ask around. I just decide to go at very last minute, then off I go. I don't like to have to go around asking and then people will be expecting more about the run, where to meet ah ? what pace ? where to tumpang stuff ? Hahlo, its a weekday night run, impromptu, cannot expect me to organise right? :P I'm sian, that's why i go for night runs, still want to make me more sian ??
  3. These are ninja runs, and I don't see a need to publicise these runs, let alone post in the forum. As such, you don't see me posting such runs in the forum (I wouldn't!). As it is also a tall order to expect me to jio everyone in sgrunners (short of posting in the forum), it will be likely that people will be left out if i jio some and didn't jio some others. I hence find it a lesser of the 2 sins to just not jio. So everyone is equal. That's why my policy is mostly dun jio. If people ask me where I'm going then I will willingly tell them I'm going for a run, he/she can then join if interested.
If my ninja runs in any way has upset anyone, I will hereby give a one-off, blanket apology for not inviting you. :) I hope you can understand that as much as I would love all your company, it just isn't practical to include everyone. It is also not my responsibility to keep everyone informed of runs nor is it my desire to have big group runs everytime I run. I need my space too, to run with just a small selected group of friends whom I know I can "activate" at last minute and also with people I'm comfy with, without having to "organise" the run.

Lastly, I hope that those who are unhappy they were not "jio-ed" will leave those who kindly agreed to run with me alone. I found out that these few poor souls have bore the brunt lately by people who questioned them why they were not "jio-ed". Aiyo, pls leave my poor buds alone la. If you want to blame, blame me can ? U not happy tell me lah, i treat u teh peng ok ? :)

I have to thank several people too for being understanding enough to know that it is ok not to be "jio-ed". That it is NOT about them. That they will be perfectly ok if they were not invited. Similarly, let me announce here too that if you do go for runs, pls feel free not to invite me. I will not feel upset for not being "jio-ed" and anyway, we are all adults. You are free to run with whoever you like, and entitled to your own ninja runs :)

I think there are many people who do ninja-runs (that's why the term ninja is so common in sgrunners ?), so I'm not the only one right ? :)

Chivalry

..... is dead ?

A good friend of mine was upset over something that happened recently, which brought me thinking about chivalry and basic courtesy. Is there a fine line between the two ? In mathematical terms, could we say they have an intersection ? where something could be considered both chivalrous and basic courtesy ? Hmmm ... does it even make sense ?

Ok, the most apt merriam-webster definition for chivalrous behaviour that applies to modern day is "a : marked by honor, generosity, and courtesy b : marked by gracious courtesy and high-minded consideration especially to women" while courteous behaviour is defined as "marked by respect for and consideration of others"

What do they mean ? The acts of chivalry and courtesy are very subjective. Just like one man's meat is another man's poison. What I consider as unchivalrous may be acceptable behaviour to someone else ? Or what I consider as chivalrous may be viewed as chauvinistic to some feminists?

This good friend of mine lamented that some of our mutual guy friends did not exhibit any chivalry in a particular instance. It was getting late one night after our gathering, and when it was time to go home, all the guys just drove home in their own cars without offering the gals a ride. My first reaction was to laugh. I guess I have been used to such "callous" behaviour. Maybe guys only behave chivalrously to shwee mei meis or their girlfriends and since I don't belong to either of this category, I am quite used to such behaviour. *shrug* But it is so common that I have to console this guy friend of mine that being chivalrous (in SG at least) is the exception rather than the rule!! I am curious what kind of environment he grew up in such that he seemed appalled by this incident (I sure wouldn't mind living in his kind of environment hehehe) ! The gals that grew up in his environment are sooo fortunate, but hope they will never need to live with us common folk as i think they will have a real culture shock :P

Of course, I believe there will be many (guys especially?) who will object violently to what I just said and of course a similar proportion who will agree. This is really just my own tots, as I previously mentioned, this blog is like my brain dump ... of what I see, observe, interpret. They may not be true but well, they are real enough for me to blog about it :)

So, what constitutes CHIVALRY in KJ's books. I started off this post about chivalry and courtesy and to me, I think that the basic courtesy can be an act of chivalry too (when demonstrated to a lady). Some acts of chivalry (or basic courtesy?) :
  1. Opening the door for a gal (instead of opening the door, getting in and not even helping to just keep the door open !!! I find that downright discourteous!)
  2. Helping her with her bags when she is obviously overloaded with bags (again, i thought that common sense to just extend your assistance to ANYONE - regardless of gender - when you see someone carrying lots of stuff! But somehow I have had many occasions when I carrying loads of stuff and the guy still just happily walk along never offering a finger!!! I find tat really irritating!!!!)
  3. Sending a gal home (be it by cab or walking her to the lift) late at nite. "Late" of course is subjective. I have friends who will walk me to the lift even if it means 8+pm at night (thanks !) and of course I have others who think I will be able to fight off any attackers anytime of the day (thanks too for your vote of confidence! )
  4. Offering a seat to a lady. It would be toooo much to ask for in the general context. I would imagine though that if we are in a group outing and there are just not enough chairs to go around, the guys should at least let the gals sit down while they hunt for chairs ? Thankfully so far the guy friends I have are all gentlemen and i don't have this problem.
  5. I have a friend who though do not own a car and will not send me home, but will jot down the taxi number that I hop into, and check with me via sms to make sure I am home. I thought that very considerate and important too coz if something really untoward happens to me, at least he can tell the police who to look for :P I shld make it a point to do that for my other gal friends too.
  6. Pressing the "Door open" button in the lift. This one is one of my pet peeves. This is sooooo common in SG. I dunno, do everyone think that they have special powers and they can keep the door open just by staring at it or willing it to be kept open ? Or they rather the door just close and crush the poor people trying to get in, so that those inside can get up/down to their desired floors faster???? I just find it totally unacceptable that people will head straight into the lift cabin, not lifting a finger just to keep the door open. :( And this, is BASIC courtesy, not even chivalry!
I will add on to this as and when I think of something. Anyway, I would like to add a disclaimer that the above is just MY OBSERVATION, not necessarily what I encounter, so I'm not saying that the guys I know / met are not chivalrous ok ? :) On the contrary, some of these observations are made BECAUSE you guys demonstrated chivalry, I noticed them (yes I do thank you very much) and hence I know what it feels like. Well done guys! :) Hence, though I couldn't say that chivalry is dead dead, it sure leaves one wanting.

Having said all these, I guess some guys might also have deliberately held back expressing chivalry so as not to risk being misinterpreted, nor don't want their spouse/girlfriend to be jealous etc. Worse, they might be worried that they would be snubbed at, or scolded, for helping a lady who happens to be a feminist and insist on being treated equal and not given any special attention. I personally do not think being offered help or receiving help is a sign of weakness, it just helps make life easier. Why try to carry so much in one's shoulders, when you have people around to help you ? I like to help my friends and I will willingly accept help from my friends too. That's what make the world a better place to live in. :)

Ok, I think this is enough nonsense for a post. I welcome any comments/feedback regarding this. It would be good if you could post about some chivalrous behaviour you have encountered or wish to encounter. Let's reward good behaviour so that such behaviour will repeat and become more widespread. :)

Pre-National Day Run

CBD run this week is cancelled due to the fireworks. We anticipate the CBD area to be thronged with onlookers trying to catch a good view of the fireworks. Some of the sgrunners arranged to meet at the Esplanade food centre to I suppose to "chope" good seats and wait for the fireworks and also since there is a National Day Bug run on Wed morning.

Since I will not be joining the wed mrn run (too fast for me - 20km at 6min pace. I will just be left smelling their dust) and I'm not very much into crowds, I decided to still go for a run. Roentgen felt the same way especially when he would be stuck in National Stadium the whole day on Wed, he desperately needed a run to purge all the work stress. Told Teelee about it yesterday during the teelee recovery run and since he is game, we decided to just go for it. Unfortunately all the people we jio-ed couldn't make it, so it was left with just the three musketeers :)

Started the run at Kovan MRT. We do not have a plotted out route, but we know we wanted to cover between 15-18km and to bring Roentgen around the HSP route. Since I'm the DR, I definitely wasn't the one leading the run. Teelee led the way and Roentgen was just taking in the sights, asking us where this and that place was.

The pace was good, slow enough for me and the guys were very accomodating. Weather was kind to us tonight too, there was a constant cool breeze and I guess running alongside big plots of unused land helps as there wasn't any obstruction to the wind. And since today is the 15th day of the lunar month, the moon was really round and beautiful.

We ended the run with a super yummilicious taiwan muay with lots of vegetables. The vegetables actually tasted very fresh, unlike the many muay stalls we have tried previously where all the vegetables are all soggy and totally lacks nutritional value. We then proceeded to the Selegie soya bean curd nearby for our dessert. The hunks had soya bean curd, while thirsty me had my grass jelly. Yummy!!!

Ended the wonderful run and company with Roentgen sending me home. Gam siah very much, Roentgen!!! *bow*

Thanks Roentgen & Teelee for the great company for the run!

Total distance covered : 15.9km
Total time taken : 2 hours 8 mins

Teelee's Recovery Run

Getting very lazy to go gym nowadays. As usual, I procrastinated in office, mulling over whether i shld just get my fat body to the gym for my Monday spinning class. But as usual, my attempt failed and thankfully found out that Teelee was running - a recovery run after his siong Bintan marathon just the day before. So I jumped on the chance and asked him to wait for me.

Rushed home, changed and out of the door to meet up with the cool dude at my place. I was feeling kinda sluggish and was worried that I wouldn't be able to run. Anyway, since teelee is doing his recovery run, I have more reasons and excuses to run super slow and slow him down (and not feel guilty about it for the first time! hoooray!!!).

We decided to run to Kovan and back. As the run was relaxing (I didn't hit more than 75% max HR) at any point in time i think, teelee suggested to do an extra distance at the Ponggol Park connector. Since I was hoping to cover more mileage, albeit at a slow pace compared to teelee, I was game for it. We just ran along the connector and as we continued on, the route just got more .. and more.. deserted!!! At one point even cool dude commented it was deserted only for us to immediately see a couple and a family taking a night stroll (hahaha). I didn't say anything then but I was feeling a bit scared running at night along that stretch, especially when it is the lunar 7th month!!! aiyo, *shiver* ... was very glad when we hit the end of the connector and u-turn back to have our dinner at the KPT opposite Ponggol Park.

Nice relaxing run, 9.5km in 1hr 10mins.

Pls go to teelee's blog for the map.

Thanks for the nice company, Teelee!
Really got to kow tow to him, ran 42km just the day before and still able to run the following day!!!!

LSD @ ECP

Good ol' Teelee & Taz were not free on Saturday to help plan for an LSD. Teelee was going to the Bintan marathon with IMD while Taz has some personal engagements. Roentgen hence planned out a route (he said it was similar to the animiles run) and Superboy helped to coordinate to inform everyone.

To avoid the morning sun, we decided to start at 630am. Junie & I reached ECP carpark B1, Roentgen, Angel, Daisiki & Cosmic came shortly after in Roentgen's car, who has kindly picked up the gals & guy. Renoh, Gen (new to sgrunners i think, who is training for his tri), SV & a lady (whom somehow I just couldn't get her name!!!!! serious sign of aging :( ) arrived at about the same time. While waiting for Loneshare, Superboy, Bryan (Superboy's friend), Shut & Charmane to arrive, Taz came running up to us (he was doing a morning run from his place to ECP and back !!! wow!! Could tell that he had been speeding! must check out his blog to find out more :))
Not long after, Loneshark (or formerly known as nemo) called to say that they were not able to locate Bryan. After many phone calls, we decided to start the run without them, and they will play catch up game when they reached. oops!!!

Running @ ECP early in the morning is soo refreshing. The cool breeze from the sea, watching the sun peeking out from the sky, meeting the so many early risers who are already running in ECP ... it was what I would consider the BEST way to spend a Saturday morning. No, I don't think sleeping in & lazing in bed is such an enjoyable affair anymore. It just makes one more sluggish and lazy. hehe. I was running with Cosmic & the new gal, chatting happily about nothing important, just getting to know one another better and hoping that my chatter will help to make her comfortable (hope I'm not yakking like some SCB - siao char bo! :P). And I even met cfred doing his ninja at ECP!

By the time we reached the half way mark at the country club, Renoh, Gen, Cosmic, Daisiki & the gal were already 10 minutes (i think) on their return leg.

This run was a little faster than the last LSD we did last week, but the sights, the cool breeze along the whole stretch really made this run a very very good run. Enjoyed myself tremendously. We stretched & cooled down at the starting point with Roentgen & Superboy supplying all the 100+ and bananas! Thanks guys!!!

We took some pics, showered and had breakfast at the Old Airport Road. Had this pumpkin kueh and chee cheong fun. Not fantastic really ... I had so much fun yakking and laughing with the gals (Angel, Charmane, Daisiki) & Roentgen - the lone man at our table. At one point we even started talking about gal stuff forgetting the one guy's presence haha ... ooops! But ok lah, that means we treat him as one of us, one of the hao2 jie3 mei4 mah, right gals :P

After breakfast, we bade our goodbyes while Rogentgen, Loneshark & myself headed to Suntec to begin our work on the HWA thingy, with the hunky Renoh joining us (hooray!). Renoh gave us lots of good inputs on the HWA thingy, and answering to our queries about how other charities did it so that we can tap on their good ideas. I was in charge of getting the blog site up while sharkie (Loneshark) used his excellent (and may i say EXCELLENT) marketing skills to get the various publicity papers (appeal letter, e-flyer etc.) out. Roentgen was on site to generate all the great ideas, bounce off ideas with sharkie, helping me with the blog site, giving me pointers on the aesthetics of the page etc. The 4 of us went through the available templates on blogspot and finally decided on one theme that we though will fit HWA perfectly. With that I was able to customize all the color fonts and layout of the content. Everyone worked together, throwing out ideas and having lots of fun along the way. I have to say, this is one of the most enjoyable work I've ever done!!!

I have to say I learnt a lot from Loneshark & Roentgen. Loneshark's skills in marketing is excellent (or maybe I shld say I have none!!!). Its wonderful how the delivery of the same message could affect the outcome. I mean I always know that, but i just dunno how to do it. I guess I'm a very factual person, i just give facts & figures, but I do not know how to "package" this information in a palatable manner. This sure is something I have to brush up on, and I guess I just have to observe more, learn from the experts like Sharkie & Roentgen and everyone else. That's how we improve ourselves, observing & learning from others.

We accomplished lots in that over 5 hours that we were together. Roentgen & Sharkie even came up with this very meaningful tagline "GO THE EXTRA MILE. Run for HWA". Great work!!!

To motivate ourselves to get the work done, we planned to eat Oiishi Pizza for dinner. When we finally finished our work, which was about 8+pm, we rushed down to the nearest outlet at Thomson and pigged out on Teriyaki Chicken & Spicy seafood pizzas, wings, croqueet (dunno how to spell). Wow! I have to say I'm really impressed by their pizzas! Very nice, thin crust and extremely yummilicious!! I have to admit I don't feel half as guilty getting fat eating such great food :P

Again, we had a good time yakking and catching up. And it is in this dinner (or during the ride up to dinner) that I found out that there has been gossips on-going in our little kampung community about me and Sharkie! Almost fell off my chair!! Pls lor, we are like siblings! *faintz* *pengz* *laugh until jaw drop* my poor brudder sharkie is just as shocked haha ... *shake head vehemontly*

What a wonderful day .... Fresh air, cool breeze, great company at ECP LSD, good teamwork, motivation exhibited during the HWA discussions and a yummilicious dinner! Can a day go any better ? :P Thanks to everyone for making my Saturday so happy! *2 thumbs up*

CBD Run

Finally!!! We did not run the Jetty route this week (Yes yes!!!). Frankly many of us were so sick of that route, its boring and hardly scenic and many of us were asking whether we can change route. Thankfully, the organisers were receptive and switched to the Marina South Park-Sheares Bridge-Esplanade route.

As usual, we have a huge turnout of about 30+ people. I shall not attempt to list down everyone here because there are quite a number of new faces. If your name does not appear below, pls just accept that I'm old and don't have a photographic memory. So pls dun come and give me grief like "Why is my name not inside ah ?" "How can you forget me ?? :(" :P If it really irks you so much, leave a comment, I will update your name asap :P So to those whose name did not appear but was there at the CBD run, i apologise in advance *bow* LOL

Sgrunners who were at the run include : Nemo, Angelica, Balasing, Cfred, Cosmic, Roentgen, Renoh (xi1 ke4!!!), Sxuanjing, Puayhien, Tiwazz, Shut, Junie (another xi1 ke4!), Kay, Superboy, Gems, Divey, Aichai, Don, the brazilian lady working in Capital Tower (sorry, didn't catch her name), Teelee, Ronnie, IMD, SV, Charlotte, Cookie, Charmane, Zqang, Novaflux, Meteor, MightyJoe, Fennel.

The run was easy and relaxing, I didn't want to push myself so was taking it slow with Roentgen and sxuanjing. Nowadays no one stops even after hitting the Sundial at Marina South Park (wah wee, everyone getting super strong!). We went up Sheares Bridge and met Aichai at the foot of the bridge. Aichai, meteor and I then ran the distance back and as I was feeling in good form, I just subconsciously pushed a little harder and running at a faster pace, but I was still able to carry a conversation and not gasp for air :) Thanks to aichai for following my pace and helping me complete the run without really feeling like giving up and also thanks to him for giving me all the tips about what one shld do in an environment etc.

Last week CBD run was horrible. No water nor cakes. This time round, many of the folks took the initiative to buy drinks and ended up we had so many bottles of 100+!!! (Thanks to Charlotte, Teelee, FBB & Roentgen!!!). I bought 2 cakes (1 banana choc and the other choc rum & berry) from Awfully Chocolates to celebrate Charlotte's BD. Was told before that the cake is great, and Charlotte did mention about this stall, so I decided to go during lunch time to purchase these 2 cakes :P

After the birthday song singing, cake eating and jellies (cfred actually made us jellies!! WOW!! a hunk that knows how to make stuff!!!!) and tau sar piahs from Penang (thanks to Shut for being such an angel! coming back from his Penang bridge run bearing food stuff for us!!!), we headed to Maxwell for our yummy dinner. We bade our farewell after a hearty meal and as usual, our wonderful teelee drove the HSP folks back home. Thanks teelee!!

Another great run with awesome company! Thanks to all!!
